Think of a time that you said YES! to getting involved in a project, event, or activity that you may have not known a lot about.  What made you want to be involved?  Talk to a family member or a friend and ask them this question?  What did you come up with?  Again, no right or wrong answer...but notice your ideas, and common ideas.

Share your response to this question in the discussion, and comment on the response from at least one other family.  Note that you must be signed in to Moodle to respond and to see comments.

I am in the National Honor Society through school and through that community many friends or classmates have asked me to participate in many different activities. One of them being to join green team and take an environmental class at our school. this involved so much volunteering from emptying recycling bins and compost bins to helping construct a school greenhouse. Which lead to things outside of the school community like trash walks and community flower plantings to educational teachings. I said yes because it is so much fun to work with your friends and meet new people through service!

That is pretty awesome Jordan.  And being involved in this level of organization is helpful for other projects too.  With this project behind you, what's next for you?

Jordan,

These all sound like wonderful community projects! I love the school greenhouse idea!

When we have joined community events, it has almost always been because we knew that it was a great cause and we would enjoy spending time with friends while doing it. Even a trash pick up with small children was fun this way and afforded opportunities to enjoy worms and other fun creatures we encountered along the way.

Last year when it was so difficult to find garden seeds, we were blessed to partner with our local cooperative extension to sort and distribute seeds that had been donated to them but weren't able to be distributed through normal programming. Our family spent hours sorting seeds and getting to know our veggies and flowers. Then we put together full garden packs to distribute through several food pantries within the community. We also were able to organize personalized seed packages for many individuals and families and arranged contactless pickups/dropoffs for them.

This led into mentoring several families who began their own gardens last year. In all, we enjoyed a tremendous sense of community while encouraging anyone who had time and space to plant and grow foods of their own to meet their own needs and to share with others.

What a great project Danielle!  I love this idea.  Planning and planting is a big part of what our family does - I haven't considered getting others started in quite this way.  Our 4-H club collaborates with the local FFA to take care of the garden that the ag class plants and then either eat or share what they harvest.  Sharing seeds or starter plants at the beginning of the season is  a great extender to that.  Again, thanks for the great idea!!!
